Sugarloaf Parkway Extension
Gwinnett County Department of Transportation
Sugarloaf Parkway Extension Phase I
Project Number F-0270

Proposed Sugarloaf Parkway Extension
from State Route 20 / Grayson Highway to State Route 316 / University Parkway

Need and Purpose
The existing Sugarloaf Parkway is a four-lane road from Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to State Route 20/Grayson Highway that connects the area north of Duluth and the area south of Lawrenceville.

The proposed project extends Sugarloaf Parkway six miles from State Route 20 to State Route 316/University Parkway between U.S. 29/State Route 8/Winder Highway and Harbins Road east of Lawrenceville. The project would provide a limited-access route to reduce local traffic congestion in Lawrenceville and commuter traffic congestion during rush hours by providing much-needed cross-county connectivity. Funding would come from sales tax (SPLOST) revenue for transportation improvements.

Project Description
The proposed road features two 12-foot lanes in each direction with a 44-foot grassed median and 16-foot shoulders within a 200-foot right-of-way. The proposed speed limit is 45-mph through the first two curves east of SR 20 and then 55-mph for the remaining length of the project. The route includes upgraded, signalized intersections at State Route 20, New Hope Road, Martins Chapel Road, Campbell Road, and a half-cloverleaf interchange at State Route 316.

The Extension would cross over Chandler Road and under Hiram Davis Road and Alcovy Roads. Bramlett Shoals Road would be closed on either side of the proposed extension, with a new, two-lane connector road constructed from Hiram Davis Road to Bramlett Shoals Road.

The concept and field studies show that approximately 145 property parcels will be impacted by this project. The Gwinnett County Department of Transportation intends to acquire necessary rights of way at fair market value and is responsible for appraising and purchasing the land and helping relocate individuals, families, or businesses if necessary.

Proposed Schedule
• Construction of Section I (Grayson Highway/State Route 20 to New Hope Road) - construction is currently underway and is anticipated to be completed by late 2010
• Section II (New Hope Road to Martins Chapel Road/Bramlett Shoals Road)- construction planning is underway and actual construction to be begin in mid-February 2009 and anticipated to be completed by late 2011
• Section III (Martins Chapel Road/Bramlett Shoals Road to State Route 316) - preliminary design underway
• Right of way acquisition - ongoing
