Purpose
|
The Code Enforcement Unit is dedicated to educating and informing citizens of the codes and ordinances established for the county by the Board of Commissioners, which set minimum requirements and standards regarding property and structures to promote and protect the public health, safety, convenience, order, and general welfare of all its citizens. These minimum standards are designed to preserve and improve the quality of life for present and future citizens of the county and promote a sense of community, preserve the sanctity of the family, facilitate quiet and peaceful neighborhoods, limit congestion of motor vehicles, and control transiency.

This civilian unit is comprised of 11 Code Enforcement Officers and two Code Enforcement Supervisors. While located at the Police East Precinct, officers are typically in their assigned geographic territories during their workday. Officers not only respond to reported violations, but initiate cases as well. Although not required, typically a Notice of Violation will be issued with a compliance deadline. Upon follow up, if the violation still exists, a citation can be issued.

Penalties
|
Citations are heard in the Environmental Division of Recorder's Court at 115 Stone Mountain Street in Lawrenceville. Each ordinance lists its penalties; see the web links listed below. For example, Property Maintenance violations are subject to a minimum $250 fine, not to exceed $1,000 per day. Each day that a violation continues shall be deemed a separate offense.
