The Gwinnett County Department of Fire & Emergency Services' mission is to save lives and protect property. We do this by delivering progressive and innovative educational programs and services in response to the needs of our citizens. All of our programs are free of charge.

Fire Safety Education
|
Our fire safety education programs will provide participants with valuable, life saving information about the characteristics of fire, what to expect in a fire, and what to do if caught in a fire. In addition, fire personnel will teach participants how to design and practice appropriate home and business fire escape plans. The list below highlights many of the fire safety programs provided.
Fire Safety Training
Gain knowledge and learn skills to help you be prepared in case of a fire. The program includes an overview of basic fire safety procedures as well as instruction on how to operate a fire extinguisher. This program is designed as classroom training and does not include a live fire demonstration. The program can be tailored to business or residential groups.
Fire Safety for Seniors
This program is specifically designed to teach senior citizens how to recognize and eliminate fire hazards and thereby reduce their risk of fire related injuries. The training promotes fire safety in the home.
Youth Fire Safety Training Facility
Located behind Fire Station #20 in Lawrenceville, this facility offers a hands-on opportunity for elementary school age children to learn the fire safety skills needed in a fire emergency. The outdoor fire safety course includes six illustrated bilingual teaching stations and a fire safety house. Participants will put their new emergency decision-making skills to use in a simulated fire situation.
Youth Firesetter Intervention Program
This program is designed as a means to reduce juvenile fire setting behavior. It is an education-based intervention program aimed at teaching a child about the dangers of fire setting and the impact of his or her actions. The program is made up of a collection of components to meet the needs of youth firesetters of different ages.
Emergency Fire Drill
This evaluation program is designed for area businesses. Knowing how to escape may be the key to surviving a fire emergency. Conducting regular fire drills can provide the knowledge and confidence needed to ensure residents and employees know how to escape a fire safely.
Fire Station Tours
Kids of all ages enjoy seeing how firefighters live and work. Tours include fire safety tips, a demonstration of firefighter gear, and a chance to view firefighting apparatus. Tours are available at any of our stations seven days a week 9:00 am - 7:00 pm. Personnel are subject to emergency calls and may be unable to fulfill request.
Fire Engine Visits
Firefighters will visit local schools and daycare facilities to give the kids fire safety tips, show the fire engine, demonstrate their fire protection gear, and teach them not be afraid of Firefighters. Personnel are subject to emergency calls and may be unable to fulfill request.

Life Safety Education
|
Our life-safety education programs will teach participants how to recognize and care for life-threatening emergencies. The classes listed below are provided free of charge several times each month, and reservations are taken on a first come basis.
CPR/AED and First Aid Training
CPR, early defibrillation, and advanced life support can save lives. The CPR/AED program covers adult, child, and infant CPR, obstructed airway, and automatic external defibrillation. It is designed to teach participants to recognize and care for life-threatening emergencies. The First Aid portion of the program provides the basic first aid knowledge and skills needed to provide emergency assistance before professional help arrives. Through hands-on demonstrations, participants are taught how to effectively recognize and treat minor emergencies.
Gwinnett HeartWatch Program
The Key to Surviving Cardiac Arrest is Prompt Defibrillation! Automatic External Defribrillators save lives! The Gwinnett HeartWatch Program is an effort by the Gwinnett County Department of Fire & Emergency Services to help neighborhood, civic, and business groups start their own AED Program. While aquiring the AED is the responsibility of the individual group or organization, the Gwinnett County Department of Fire & Emergency Services will offer advice on: getting started; placement of the AED; AED training; and on-going support of your Gwinnett HeartWatch Program. Water Safety
|
Knowing how to swim is an important part of water safety, but it's not enough. More than 7,000 people drown in the U.S. each year, including more than 1,200 children. Many of these water-related deaths could have been prevented. In addition to lakes and swimming pools, deaths have occurred in wading pools, hot tubs, bathtubs and even buckets. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children.
We offer training in important, lifesaving skills like CPR, first aid, and use of Automatic External Defibrillators. We encourage all adults to keep a close eye on children in and around water - even if those children know how to swim. A designated caregiver should be in the water with small children. Seconds count in preventing death or disability.
Emergency phone numbers and life-saving equipment should be posted in designated swimming areas. Everyone should follow posted rules and directions given by lifeguards. Boating safety laws require life preservers for everyone on board and place certain restrictions on boat operation. Leaving room between yourself and others can help avoid accidents at pools, beaches, water parks, and lakes.
