The purpose of this area of the Fire Marshal's office is to enforce the requirements for the prevention, control, and mitigation of dangerous conditions created by the presence of hazardous materials. There are basically two categories of hazardous materials:
- A health hazard is a classification of a chemical for which there is statistically significant evidence that acute or chronic health effects are capable of occurring in exposed persons. They include chemicals that are toxic, highly toxic, and corrosive.
- A physical hazard is a chemical that is a combustible liquid, compressed gas, cryogenic, explosive, flammable gas, flammable liquid, flammable solid, organic peroxide, oxidizer, pyrophoric or unstable (reactive) or water-based material.
The Hazardous Materials Inventory Statement (HMIS) is intended to communicate the types and quantitites of materials that are stored and/or used on a property. Evaluation of hazardous materials is necessary for the control and mitigation of dangerous conditions created by hazardous materials.
