The Health and Human Services Division responds to citizens' needs by offering programs, services, information, and community outreach efforts from its sites throughout the county. The three senior activity centers (Buford, Lawrenceville, and Norcross), the human service centers in Buford and Norcross, and the Centerville Community Center can provide resource information to help with some issues, but they are not crisis clearinghouses.

Medicare Advantage Plans
People with Medicare now have several choices about how they can receive health care coverage. They can choose to continue to keep Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B) or enroll in one of the many Medicare Advantage plans (Medicare Part C) being offered by private insurance companies. Becoming educated about these choices is important in making a well informed decision. The documents, Medicare Advantage Plans – What You Need to Know (pdf) and Ask the Agent These Questions (pdf) from the Atlanta SMP and GeorgiaCares provide important information and include questions to ask insurance agents. These documents can be printed for distribution and is available by email in five other languages: Chinese, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese. To request the translated material, contact Vicki Shanahan at vshanahan@atlantaregional.com. The Atlanta SMP educates senior adults and others about healthcare fraud. To request a presentation, send an email to above address.

Homecare for people with Pandemic H1N1 flu
- Check with their healthcare provider about special care they might need if they are pregnant or have a health condition such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma or emphysema
- Check with their healthcare provider about whether they should take antiviral medications
- Stay home for seven days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer, except to seek medical care or for other necessities
- Get plenty of rest
- Drink clear fluids (such as water, broth, sports drinks, electrolyte beverages for infants) to keep from being dehydrated
- Cover coughs and sneezes. Clean hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub often and especially after using tissues and after coughing or sneezing into hands
- Wear a facemask – if available and tolerable – when sharing common spaces with other household members to help prevent spreading the virus to others. This is especially important if other household members are at high risk for complications from influenza.
- Avoid close contact with others – do not go to work or school while ill
- Be watchful for emergency warning signs (see below)
Emergency warning signs
In children, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
- Fast breathing or trouble breathing
- Bluish or gray skin color
- Not drinking enough fluids
- Severe or persistent vomiting
- Not waking up or not interacting
- Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
- Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
- Sudden dizziness or confusion
- Severe or persistent vomiting
- Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

Financial and Retirement Planning
A new web-based resource for individuals and aging organizations has been established providing comprehensive information promoting financial literacy and retirement planning for women with average and low-incomes. The National Education and Resource Center on Women and Retirement Planning is jointly operated by the federal Administration on Aging and the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER).
The Center improves women’s access to basic financial and retirement planning tools to promote financial literacy. The Center's materials include a full library of fact sheets on topics such as budgeting, saving and investing, understanding your pension plan, buying long-term care insurance, Social Security, retirement health and other important topics. Lifetime financial planning is one key to reducing the unacceptably high rate of poverty among older women. Women with financial skills and resources live a more secure and healthy life. The Center's user-friendly tools help women gain the financial skills they need to improve their future financial security. Please click here for more information.
Women and advocates are also invited to join WISER’s email list. Click here to join and receive monthly updates regarding WISER’s activities, new publications and other useful tips. Your email address is kept completely private.
