Vote Registration Qualifications
You must be...

  • a U.S. Citizen
  • a legal resident of Georgia and the county where you desire to register
  • 17 1/2 years old to register
  • 18 years old to vote

You must not be...

  • serving a sentence for a felony conviction involving moral turpitude
  • judicially declared to be mentally incompetent

Why must I provide personal information to register? It seems invasive and could be construed as discriminatory.

The State maintains the voter registration files for approximately five million registered voters in Georgia. The driver's license number and SSN are used to distinguish between voters with similar names and as a security measure to ensure voters are not fraudulently registering multiple times within the state. Please note that information is confidential and can not  be provided to the public, candidates or elected officials except upon a court order.

Gender and race are not required. However, this information is used for statistical analysis by the U.S. Justice Department, and others, to ensure that Georgia is not discriminating in voter registration and elections practices.

How can I find out where I vote or who my representatives are?

About 4 to 6 weeks after you have registered and your application has been approved you will receive a Precinct Identification Card containing that information. Or you may call the elections office and they will provide that information. You may also request a new card if yours has been misplaced.

Where can I register to vote?
  • Offices where driver's licenses or ID cards are issued
  • Offices where persons apply for public assistance or which administer programs for the disabled
  • Voter Registration & Elections office
  • All public libraries
  • Mail in applications are available at: www.sos.state.ga.us
  • All city halls

*You must be registered 30 days prior to any election to be eligible to vote in that election. If you are already registered and have had a change of name or address, within the county, it must be changed 30 days prior to any election, to be effective for that election.

If you have moved outside of Gwinnett County, you must register 30 days prior to the election to vote in the county where you now reside; Georgia does not transfer registrations from one county to another.

How can I find out about running for an office?

For State and Federal offices you must contact the Secretary of State's office at 404.656.2871 or visit their website: www.sos.state.ga.us

For County and Judicial Offices you must contact the County Election's office at 678.226.7210.

For Municipal offices you must contact the city hall in which you reside.

Do I have to register with a political party?
No. Georgia has an open primary system. You may choose at the time of election which ballot you want to vote.

How do I change my name and/or address?
The same way you register. You can download a form from the County website. Just remember that any change must be received in the Voter Registration office 30 days prior to any election for the change to be in effect for that election. Once the change is processed, you will receive a new precinct identification card with your polling location and political districts.

I registered to vote several months ago but I haven't received any notification, should I assume my registration was received and processed?

Absolutely not. Please visit Georgia Secretary of State's web site to check your registration. If it can't locate any information on you, contact the Voter Registration office at  678.226.7210 or send an e-mail. You follow this same procedure if you've recently made a change to your name and or address. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL ELECTION DAY. Often times there are problems or applications are lost in the mail, and waiting until Election Day may delay your voting or you may be ineligible to vote.

How long should it take to receive a precinct identification card?
Normally it should only take four to six weeks, however in an election year it may take longer. Check the Georgia Secretary of State's web site or call the Voter Registration office.

Do I have to have the precinct identification card to vote?
No, that is strictly just to inform you of your polling location and political districts. In addition, you cannot use it as form of identification to vote because you do not have to show identification to obtain it.
