The Gwinnett County Zoning Resolution defines satellite dishes and satellite dish antennas as accessory structures. On corner lots, accessory structures must located in the rear yard behind the house and they must also be setback from the side street the same distance as the setback for the house (corner lots have two (2) required front yards). On all lots, including corner lots, accessory structures are supposed to be located in the rear yard behind the house and at least 5 feet from interior side and rear property lines.
Recently, however, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) "suspended" the power of local governments throughout the country to enforce zoning laws about the placement of satellite dish antennas on private property. In other words, the provisions of the Zoning Resolution just mentioned are not currently enforceable by the county. Satellite dish antennas are still not allowed to be placed in the street right-of-way. A building permit is not required to be obtained for satellite dishes less than 6 feet in diameter.
If you have any questions regarding satellite dish antenna requirements, please call the Gwinnett County Department of Planning and Development at 678.518.6000 between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, except holidays.
