Gwinnett County 911 provides an outstanding training program. Training is a top priority for the Communication Officer position. Our training program exceeds state standards. We provide an additional three-week in-depth classroom training, which is above and beyond the state standards. Initial training consists of a 12 month comprehensive training program. This includes four weeks of classroom training, class lectures, job simulations and written, verbal and job performance testing. The classroom training consists of a required 40 hour Georgia P.O.S.T. Communications Officer course in order to obtain Georgia P.O.S.T. certification as a Communications Officer. The next three weeks are to familiarize the trainee with the department's policy and procedures. Communications Officers will receive training on how to access information from medical protocol cards to coach and respond to emergencies such as drowning, childbirth, CPR, the Heimlich Maneuver, and stabilization until the paramedics arrive on the scene. Through extensive training, applicants will learn to: - Use law enforcement and Fire/EMS vocabulary and codes
- Apply complex Police policies and procedures
- Possess eye-hand coordination necessary to operate and view multiple computer screens, communications equipment and a computer keyboard simultaneously
Training on the computer system involves memorizing a large number of command codes. During the training process, trainees are assigned a Training Officer and begin learning the call taking process. 911 Communication Officers will be trained on receiving and dispatching emergency calls from the public for Police, Fire and Emergency Medical response calls in stages. 911 Communications Officers must qualify in training for each area and be able to perform the required job duties for each position.
