Weekend construction on Jimmy Carter Boulevard postponed

The Gwinnett County Department of Transportation has postponed the Jimmy Carter Boulevard bridge at I-85 closure originally scheduled for November 14-17, 2014, for the diverging diamond interchange crossover to allow for the completion of additional work. The additional work includes the installation of the bridge side barrier and truss system, raised concrete medians and interchange lighting as well as paving on the Jimmy Carter Boulevard approaches to the bridge. Performing this work prior to crossover will create fewer traffic disruptions once the final lane configuration is completed.
Additional work will also be completed to widen the I-85 northbound on-ramp. The ramp widening, combined with the Georgia Department of Transportation‘s current widening on northbound I-85 between Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Indian Trial Road, will provide a new “flex lane.” These improvements will enhance the operation of the DDI during the afternoon rush hour by allowing traffic to flow more smoothly onto northbound I-85.
Gwinnett County appreciates the patience of the travelling public during the completion of this important project that will improve traffic congestion and safety at this interchange.

Diverging Diamond Interchanges
Gwinnett County Government is working with the Gwinnett Place and Gwinnett Village Community Improvement Districts (CID) to bring Diverging Diamond Interchanges (DDI) to I-85 at Pleasant Hill Road and I-85 at Jimmy Carter Boulevard.

The DDI’s innovative design relieves congestion, improves safety, and is less expensive than replacing or widening the bridge. A DDI shifts traffic to the opposite side of the road, making left turns onto the interstate easier and improving the flow of traffic across the bridge.
