With the exception of former Red Oak customers, if you have a trash cart from your previous trash provider that you no longer want, simply call your current hauler to schedule a bulky item pickup. Former Red Oak customers should contact the company directly regarding cart retrieval. If you prefer immediate resolution, take your cart to Red Oak's facility located at 7 Scott Street in Gainesville for a refund of your $50 deposit on the spot. Red Oak's hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm and Saturday 8:00am - noon. To contact them directly, call 678.455.7819. |

| New trash service is picking up | |
|
With the new trash service now in effect in unincorporated areas of Gwinnett, residents are beginning to understand how it works.
Haulers will take bulky items at no extra charge if you call your hauler to schedule the pickup.
Large families, or those who choose not to recycle, may generate more trash each week than will fit in the cart. Haulers are not required to collect extra trash beyond the 95-gallon limit. But by calling your hauler, you can get a second 95-gallon cart to handle the excess for an additional fee. To help reduce the volume of solid waste going into landfills, the new service encourages everyone to recycle 35 different materials which can all be mixed together for collection.

The new residential solid waste management plan has been implemented in unincorporated Gwinnett County as of July 1, 2010, following the approval by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners of a settlement agreement resolving four lawsuits and residential solid waste service agreements with five waste haulers. This new plan provides comprehensive and consistent solid waste, expands recycling service countywide, and responds to homeowner feedback on the desire for less illegal dumping, same-day neighborhood pickup, and less neighborhood truck traffic.
Solid waste consultant R. W. Beck, Inc., conducted a comprehensive solid waste study in 2009 to aid the County in developing the new plan. The final report on the study includes recaps and analyses of public input gathered through public forums and surveys, benchmarking of programs in other communities, review of recycling options, and recommendations for future actions. On June 24, 2010, U.S. District Court Judge Charles Pannell Jr. in Atlanta denied a motion by Waste Industries, Inc., for an injunction against Gwinnett County’s new trash plan stating the court will issue its reasons for the decision at a later date. This decision cleared the way for the plan to start on July 1 as planned. Click here for a copy of the court order. |
