(Lawrenceville, Ga., Nov. 24, 2020) – The Gwinnett Department of Transportation will reroute traffic in Dacula Monday to begin the next phase of the intersection improvement at Dacula Road and State Route 8/Winder Highway and the railroad bridge upgrade. 

In order to construct the new intersection, the contractor will close portions of Harbins Road and Dacula Road beginning Monday, Nov. 30 at 10 a.m. and detour vehicles onto McMillan Road and Broad Street.  

“While we are pleased to get to this phase of the a much-needed project, we do recognize the significant impact this closure has on the traveling public,” said Lewis Cooksey, director of the Department of Transportation. “We are working closely with the contractor to get the work done as quickly as possible and to get the roadways fully reopened. The County and the city of Dacula are working to communicate with residents to ensure they are aware of the pending closures and to request that motorists choose alternate routes when possible.” 

Detour Plan and Road Closure Details
The contractor will close Harbins Road between Freemans Mill Road and State Route 8 Monday morning. Only local traffic will be allowed on Harbins Road between Freemans Mill Road and McMillan Road. In addition, the contractor will close Dacula Road between Auburn Avenue and State Route 8. Only local, school and voter traffic will be allowed on Dacula Road between Broad Street and Auburn Avenue during the closure. 

During the road closures, through traffic will be detoured onto McMillan Road and Broad Street. To improve traffic flow and safety, signage will be placed along the route, a temporary signal will be placed at McMillan Road and Harbins Road and law enforcement will provide work-zone support during peak traffic times. 

If the weather cooperates, the County plans to open the new intersection of Harbins Road/Dacula Road and State Route 8 by year-end. This includes having traffic on two lanes of the new bridge. Additional construction is required before the full five-lane bridge can open to traffic.
