What is a transit referendum?
A transit referendum is a countywide vote on whether to fund transit projects through a dedicated Transit Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, known as a Transit SPLOST.
How will the transit referendum question read on the ballot?
The transit referendum question will read:
English
Gwinnett County Transit SPLOST Referendum
Shall a special one percent sales and use tax be imposed in the special district consisting of Gwinnett County for a period of time not to exceed thirty (30) years and for the raising of funds for transit projects?
What transit projects will be funded by the Transit SPLOST?
Should voters approve the transit referendum, the Transit SPLOST would fund up to 75 transit projects in Gwinnett
The transit projects include:
- Microtransit expansion to provide 100 percent countywide coverage
- An airport ride to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
- High-capacity transit systems like bus rapid transit and bus rapid transit lite
- Enhanced and expanded county coverage by local bus
- New transit transfer facilities
What will the Transit SPLOST cost and for how long?
If approved by voters, a one percent sales tax will be added to the purchase of goods in Gwinnett for a period of 30 years.
How is our current transit system funded?
Gwinnett’s transit system, Ride Gwinnett, is funded by property owners through the County general fund, the federal government through federal funds and discretionary grants, and Ride Gwinnett customers through fares. This dedicated Transit SPLOST would be paid for by all consumers who purchase goods in Gwinnett.
When can I vote on the transit referendum?
Voters can vote on the transit referendum during the November 5 General Election. View the Election Schedule for details about absentee and advance voting for the General Election.
Where will the transit referendum appear on the ballot? Will the referendum be translated?
The transit referendum will appear as one of the last questions on the General Election ballot under the Special Election section.
Ballots are available in English and Spanish by law, meaning that the transit referendum will be in English or Spanish depending on the ballot the voter has selected. Sample ballots are only available in English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, and Vietnamese.
