    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Aug. 19, 2009) - More than 26,000 Gwinnett-based businesses soon will get a letter from the County's license and revenue office asking for compliance with a new state immigration law. The County is required to check the immigration status of all applicants for a business/occupation tax certificate, commonly called a business license.

  • "Engage Gwinnett" Will Study Future Needs, Funding Sources

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Aug. 20, 2009) - Gwinnett County Chairman Charles Bannister and the Board of Commissioners together with the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and other civic and business leaders are launching a community initiative called "Engage Gwinnett - Committee on the Future of Gwinnett County." Committee members will spend approximately six months looking at Gwinnett County's needs for current and future government services and proposing funding strategies to pay for them over the next five years.

  • Retirements Will Save County Millions

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Aug. 25, 2009) - The first step in Gwinnett County's plan to eliminate more than 250 jobs in a major cost-saving effort resulted in 202 employees opting for retirement under an incentive offer. The vast majority, who are already eligible for retirement, will retire on or before Sept. 18. The remaining 33 are going on leave without pay until their retirement date.

  • GJAC Building Closing Nights And Weekends

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Aug. 26, 2009) - Starting Aug. 29, the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center (GJAC) will be closed on weekends and holidays and at 10 p.m. most weekday evenings to reduce operating costs. It will be kept open as needed for public hearings, court activities or other scheduled events.

  • County Makes More Budget Adjustments

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Sept. 1, 2009) - Gwinnett's separately elected officials and Constitutional officers have agreed to $1.9 million in budget cuts to help commissioners balance the books for 2009. The Board accepted their recommendations on Tuesday and cautioned that another $11 million in cuts will be needed for next year. These cuts are consistent with reductions in budgets throughout the County.

  • Judge Grants Order On State Sanctions In City-County SDS Dispute

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Sept. 9, 2009) - On Tuesday, Gwinnett County received an order to hold state sanctions in abeyance while the County and city governments continue to litigate their service delivery dispute. The order, requested by the County, was granted by the judge presiding over the litigation. The current 10-year strategy, as set forth in state legislation that became effective in 1999, expired Feb. 28. Missing the deadline for a new 10-year strategy with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs placed Gwinnett and each of its cities in an "unqualified status." The sanctions resulting from the unqualified status could have resulted in the loss of millions of dollars in state-administered financial assistance, grants, loans or permits to Gwinnett County and Gwinnett's cities.

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Sept. 15, 2009) - Commissioners voted on Tuesday to accept $7.3 million in federal stimulus funds through the U.S. Department of Energy. Gwinnett is one of 2,300 counties, cities, states, and Indian tribes in the nation that will share a total of $3.2 billion in Energy Efficiency and Conservation block grants, which are funded this year by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that was passed by Congress earlier this year.

  • Myers Appointed Gwinnett Fire Chief

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Sept. 15, 2009) - County Administrator Glenn Stephens has named Bill Myers as Gwinnett's new fire chief effective Sept. 19. Myers, a 26-year veteran of the County's Fire and Emergency Services Department, replaces Steve Rolader, who retires on Friday after 33 years with the County. The Board of Commissioners approved Myers' appointment during the Tuesday business session. Myers will oversee a department of 800 employees. His annual salary will be $135,000.

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Sept. 17, 2009) - Gwinnett County has filed a notice of appeal in response to the July 17, 2009, decision of Judge Paul Magnuson in the Jacksonville, Fla., District Court on the long-running "Water Wars" cases in which Gwinnett County is a party. Summarized, the judge ruled that if no congressional resolution is reached in three years, Gwinnett County must cease taking water for drinking and fire protection purposes from Lake Lanier.

  • Flooding Shuts Down Yellow River Water Reclamation

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Sept. 21, 2009) - Flooding has topped the electrical motor controls for the pump station that takes in untreated wastewater at Gwinnett County's Yellow River Water Reclamation Facility near Lilburn, keeping the plant from treating wastewater until the water recedes. In the meantime, the Department of Water Resources is diverting as much of the wastewater as possible to other facilities," according to Acting Director Lynn Smarr.
