  • TECHNOLOGY TASK FORCE REPORTS TO COMMISSION

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., May 20, 2011) - Gwinnett County officials on Tuesday received the final report from a task force set up last fall to explore how technology improvements can create efficiencies, increase productivity, expand partnerships, and/or create costs savings in the local government. The Excellence Through Innovation (ETI) project is a follow-up effort to the Engage Gwinnett citizens committee that reported its findings on County operations and budget issues a year ago. The Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce co-sponsored the Engage Gwinnett initiative as well as the ETI task force and also served in a support role for the task force's work.

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., May 20, 2011) - Gwinnett Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash presented the annual State of the County speech to a gathering of community and business leaders on May 18 at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth. The annual luncheon is hosted by the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and the Council for Quality Growth. The public is invited to attend this observance to pay tribute to the men and women who have served honorably in the military, during wartime or peacetime, and to memorialize the fallen heroes who have sacrificed their lives to protect our nation.   • GWINNETT AND HALL COUNTIES AGREE ON FIREFIGHTING PLAN

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., June 1, 2011) - Gwinnett County commissioners approved an automatic aid agreement for fire and emergency services with Hall County during a meeting last month. The agreement also allows firefighters from both counties to train together. "This formalizes a long-standing verbal agreement to share equipment and resources across county borders, and it will help reduce response times and provide adequate coverage along the county line during times of greatest need," Gwinnett Fire Chief Bill Myers.

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., June 2, 2011) - Gwinnett's Collins Hill Aquatic Center will soon get a new regenerative-media pool filter system that will use 90 percent less backwash water and can save as much as $25,000 on annual electricity costs. Commissioners approved the $173,385 contract with the lowest of five bidders, Waterworks Atlanta, Inc., last month.

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., June 2, 2011) - Commissioners recently approved a contract that will provide better public access to the historic Yellow River Post Office site. Improvements to the site located on the former Hudson-Nash farmstead will include historical interpretive signage for self-guided tours, restroom building, retaining wall, walkways, erosion control, grading, parking, landscaping, picnic tables and trash cans.

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., June 7, 2011) - Last month, the Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services joined 100 other fire departments across the state of Georgia to collect donations through the 21st annual Give Burns the Boot® drive. Gwinnett residents donated a total of $52,158.92 to the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation during three Saturdays in May, marking the 2011 drive a success in Gwinnett.

  • SIDEWALKS, TURN LANES GET COMMISSION APPROVAL

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., June 8, 2011) - Lanier High School and the Mountain Park Aquatic Center will get new sidewalks this summer. Gwinnett will also build new left and right turn lanes on Rockbridge Road at Summer Cove Drive and replace a drainage culvert at Garner Creek with funding from the 2009 SPLOST sales tax program and stormwater funds. Commissioners approved construction contracts for these projects on Tuesday.

  • SAVING WATER SAVES ENERGY

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., June 10, 2011) - With the arrival of hot weather, County officials want to remind residents that outdoor watering is allowed seven days a week but not between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. under both state law and county ordinances. "That's because much of the water is likely to evaporate in the heat before it soaks in," said Jim Scarbrough of Gwinnett's Water Resources department. "It's okay to water gardens and newly planted landscaping anytime but wasting water is always a waste."

Friends is a nonprofit organization that privately supplements select Gwinnett County Senior Services programs including senior meals. King & Prince Seafood Co. in Brunswick, Ga is donating the shrimp and The Hail Mary Sports Pub is donating event food and beer through their vendors. Gwinnett County Senior Services provides daily services to over 750 citizens age 60 and over.
