  • LOCAL VOLUNTEERS AND GWINNETT COUNTY PARKS & RECREATION RECEIVE AWARDS

    (Lawrenceville, GA., August 23, 2011) - Every year, Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) recognize outstanding members, agencies, and volunteers for their accomplishments. Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation (GCPR) was well represented this year at the 66th Annual GRPA State Conference. Awards were presented to the Dacula Pageant Girls and Mountain View Pageant Girls for their volunteer services to GCPR. The Dacula Pageant Girls and Mountain View Pageant Girls are a service-based organization that instills leadership skills and service in girls of all ages. For over six years, the pageant girls, ages pre-school through high school, have donated more than 1,000 hours to GCPR programs. These young ladies have taken the lead in providing excellent service to the community at large and allowing GCPR to offer many programs they otherwise could not due to minimal staffing. They are a shining example of young Gwinnett citizens working for the betterment of the community.

    WHAT: The City of Duluth will host a ceremony to unveil the Living Honorarium, a monument dedicated to everyday heroes in the military, fire, and police forces who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving the American public.     (Lawrenceville, Ga., Aug. 25, 2011) - The Gwinnett Children's Shelter in Buford got some much-needed volunteer help this month from a group of Gwinnett County employees who participated in a management training program. They restored a 500-foot nature trail through a wooded area and a wooden walkway leading to a scenic overlook deck.

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Aug. 25, 2011) - John Matelski, Gwinnett County's Chief Information Officer and Information Technology Services Director, graduated from the 2010 - 2011 National Certified Government Chief Information Officers Program earlier this year. The program is offered by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Government and GMIS International.

  • GWINNETT PARKS & RECREATION STAFF HONORED

    (Lawrenceville, GA., August 26, 2011) - The Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) presented two Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation (GCPR) staff certificates for completing the prestigious George Harris Executive Management Institute.  Eric Horne, Grounds Maintenance Manager and Elizabeth Radley, Recreation Coordinator were presented with this honor at the 66th Annual GRPA State Conference held in Macon, Georgia on August 18, 2011. The George Harris Executive Management Institute is designed to further develop skills and knowledge of recreation professionals from around the state. Only 19 recreational professionals were selected throughout the state to participate in the program this year.

  • COUNTY, GM SIGN AGREEMENT FOR WARRANTY SERVICE

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Sept. 20, 2011) - Gwinnett County continues to pursue partnerships that lower the cost of government operations, this time in the area of fleet management. Under an agreement approved by the Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, the County's fleet mechanics will be trained by General Motors to perform warranty work on Gwinnett's GM vehicles instead of sending them to a dealership for repairs. GM will provide the training at no cost and will reimburse the County for warranty work at $55.82 per hour.

    WHAT:The Atlanta Regional Roundtable will host a public meeting on the Transportation Investment Act, the proposed regional sales tax for transportation that residents in metro Atlanta will be voting on in 2012. The meeting will be an opportunity for residents to review the proposed list and ask questions.

  • LONGTIME DIRECTOR ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Sept. 30, 2011) - Brian Allen, who has led the Gwinnett County Department of Transportation since 1996, announced his retirement effective Sept. 30. County Administrator Glenn Stephens said, "Brian's many years of experience have been a tremendous asset to this community, and I believe Gwinnett County is a better place because of him." Stephens has asked Kim Conroy to serve as acting transportation director. Conroy is a 26-year veteran of Gwinnett DOT who has served as deputy director and chief engineer since 2007.

  • ROAD IMPROVEMENTS COMING TO DACULA

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Oct. 5, 2011) - Gwinnett County will spend just over a half million dollars on road improvements in the Dacula Elementary School area after commissioners approved two separate projects on Tuesday. One project will realign Old Peachtree Road at its intersection with Dacula Road, improving visibility and traffic flow. The other will add curb, gutter and sidewalks for a half mile on Fence Road near the school.

  • BOARD ESTABLISHES CITIZENS COMMITTEE, REJECTS AIRPORT QUALIFICATIONS

    (Lawrenceville, Ga., Oct. 6, 2011) - On Tuesday, the Board of Commissioners took several actions related to the potential privatization of Briscoe Field in Lawrenceville. First, the Board created a citizen review committee to assist in the potential privatization process.
