Volunteer Gwinnett generally follows the Georgia Department of Labor’s child labor laws for its volunteer opportunities.

Volunteer Gwinnett may offer opportunities outside of these guidelines based upon a particular event or other unique circumstances.

For those not familiar with the details of the child labor laws, hopefully this webpage will provide some insight.
Definition of youth volunteer
  • Minor child from 12 and 17 years old
  • Engaged in a limited task related to an educational or learning project
  • Requires parent or legal guardian permission to participate

Fair Labor Standards Act child labor laws
Georgia and federal labor laws state that “work permits are not required for volunteer positions where the minor is not receiving any compensation.”
Time restrictions for minors 14 or 15 years of age
Time restrictions for minors are dependent on the school year.

Maximum of 3 hours  per school day Maximum of 8 hours per non-school day
Maximum of 18 hours per school week Maximum of 40 hours per non-school week
Can not work before 7:00am or after 7:00pm Can not work before 7:00am or after 9:00pm*

*Evening hours extended to 9:00pm June 1 to Labor Day.
