Youth Police Academy
The Youth Police Academy (YPA) is designed to educate middle school and high school students that live in Gwinnett County about the police department and how officers enforce local and state laws. The goal of the YPA is to create and develop a relationship with students and give them an opportunity to learn about the Gwinnett County Police Department’s role in the community and the delivery of services it provides.

The YPA is open to all students that reside in Gwinnett County and that will be enrolled in middle school or high school as of August 2017.  Each student must successfully pass the application process to attend the YPA.

The YPA consists of two one week sessions, Mon-Friday from 9am-4pm. 

June 5th-9th, 2017 for current or upcoming middle school students (6-8)

July 24th-28th, 2017 current or upcoming high school students (9-12)

The curriculum includes both classroom and practical application. Some of the activities include:

  • Police department overview and jail tours
  • Pullovers
  • Aviation K-9
  • Officer Safety
  • SWAT
  • Detention Center
  • Gangs
  • ID / Crime Scene Unit
  • The Communications Center / 911

Youth Police Academy Application
Applications will be accepted beginning March 1st, 2017.  The application for the upcoming YPA can be found here.  Please complete the entire application including the essay portion which needs to be handwritten.  Once the application is completed, please email it to or mail to:

If you are selected to participate, you will receive a letter from the Training Division sent to the address on your application.
