Jimmy Carter Boulevard at I-85
The Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) at I-85 and Jimmy Carter Boulevard converted the existing Jimmy Carter Boulevard bridge over I-85 into a DDI. Gwinnett County Government worked with the Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District to complete this project.

Project specifics

The DDI at I-85 and Jimmy Carter Boulevard project includes the following improvements:

The project involved more than 0.5 mile of widening, median construction, signing, pavement marking, and signalization along Jimmy Carter Boulevard, including minor bridge rail and sidewalk reconstruction.

The existing bridge sufficiency rating score exceeded the replacement criteria, so the bridge did not need to be replaced. This project reconstructed barrier and sidewalk components of the existing bridge and these improvements were built within the existing bridge footprint with minimal impact to the existing structure.

A right-turn lane was added to the Goshen Springs Road approach to Jimmy Carter Boulevard, as recommended by previous Gwinnett County traffic and signalization studies on the corridor.

While the primary focus of the project was improving traffic flow, the project included additional features that improve pedestrian safety, such as the upgrade of pedestrian signals to current standards and the construction of an 8-foot sidewalk along the median of the bridge, flanked by barrier walls.
