Pleasant Hill Road at I-85
The Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) at I-85 and Pleasant Hill Road converted the existing Pleasant Hill Road bridge over I-85 into a DDI. Gwinnett County Government worked with the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District to complete this project.

Funding for this project was provided by the 2009 SPLOST Program and the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District.

Project specifics

The DDI at I-85 and Pleasant Hill Road project included the following improvements:

New traffic signals were reconstructed to align with the new lane configurations, and improvements include revision of the signal timing and phasing at several intersections to allow the DDI to operate efficiently within the corridor.

The existing bridge deck was maintained, but the existing outside barrier wall and sidewalk were removed. The new barrier wall was constructed on the outside of the existing deck. On each side of the median are two dedicated through lanes, one through/left-turn combination lane, and one dedicated left-turn lane.

This project also constructed sidewalks along the Pleasant Hill Road corridor from Breckinridge Boulevard/Shackelford Road to Venture Drive/Venture Parkway. When the sidewalk reaches the ramp intersections, the pedestrians are directed to cross the right-turn lanes to walk across the bridge in the median. An 8-foot sidewalk was constructed along the median of the bridge, flanked by barrier walls. The pedestrians then reverse that process at the other end of the bridge to access the conventional sidewalk location at the outside edge of the roadway.
