Gwinnett Firefighters Conduct Training with High School Students

(Lawrenceville, Ga. February 21, 2017) – The Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services, is proud to continue its long-standing partnership with Maxwell High School of Technology.  Firefighter/Paramedics work closely with the students as they learn about fire incident operations and pre-hospital emergency medical care.

On Tuesday, Feb. 21, personnel from Fire Station #20 and Instructors from the Gwinnett County Fire Academy conducted vehicle extrication demonstrations at the school.  The purpose was to share rescue principles and patient care techniques when responding to motor vehicle accidents.  Students observed firefighters as they stabilized an overturned vehicle, popped-open a car door, peeled-back the dashboard and removed the roof of a vehicle with hydraulic rescue tools (JAWS) to free trapped victims.

The high school students are part of Maxwell’s Fire Service Class and can be seen wearing the bright yellow (new) gear and helmets.  Firefighters performed the actual cutting techniques to demonstrate use of the tools for students.  The students were able to handle the rescue tools in a non-hazardous environment, while being supervised and taught by the professional firefighter/paramedics.  Other students from the Emergency Medical Responder and Automotive programs at the school also observed the demonstrations.
