EARLY MORNING FIRE DAMAGES LILBURN HOME

(Lilburn, Ga. February 20, 2017) – Firefighters responded at 3:55 a.m., to an occupant report of a house fire in the 1400 block of Blackspruce Court, SW in (unincorporated) Lilburn. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke showing from the garage and roof of a two-story wood frame house.  Firefighters quickly deployed attack hose lines and entered the structure.  Initial crews encountered heavy flames burning in the attic over the garage and fire breaking through the roof peak directly above.  The fire extended to the main attic area via the wall and chimney chase before being brought completely under control.  The majority of the fire was contained to the attic and caused heavy damage.  There was extensive smoke and water damage to part of the first and second floor due to fire control efforts.  Firefighters pulled sheetrock material to make sure the fire was out and checked for hotspots.

A teen in an upstairs bedroom adjacent to the garage was alerted by the smell of smoke and got her family out safe.  Smoke alarms inside the home had not yet sounded.  Upon exiting the home, the family saw heavy smoke pouring from the garage and called 9-1-1.  The father tried to douse the flames with a garden hose prior to arrival, but was unsuccessful.  There were no injuries reported.  The family (2-adults, 2-teens and 3-cats) are displaced due to the damage.  They denied assistance from the American Red Cross and were planning to stay with a nearby relative.

Per the Fire Investigator, the blaze appears to have started in the ceiling and attic space above the garage.  The fire ran the wall and chimney chase and spread to the second attic above the main part of the house.  The exact cause of the fire is still undetermined and is under investigation.  The blaze was brought under control by 4:21 a.m.
