FIRE IN CLOTHES DRYER DAMAGES HOME

Firefighters responded at 8:59 a.m., to a report from the occupant of a house fire in the 800 block of Guinevere Way, SW in (unincorporated) Lilburn.  The caller to 9-1-1 reported a fire in the clothes dryer.  The occupant escaped unharmed.

Crews arrived to find heavy fire involvement on the back of a two-story, wood-frame and brick house over a basement.  Firefighters quickly deployed attack and supply hose lines and entered the burning home to battle the blaze and conduct a primary search.  They were forced to back-out after several minutes, due to deteriorating conditions on the inside and advancing flames.  Firefighters flowed water from multiple hose lines to knock-down the bulk of the fire from the exterior before going back inside to complete extinguishment.  Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while battling the blaze.  Both are doing fine and remained at the fire scene.

The occupant, an adult male was the only one home at the time and discovered smoke coming from the lint trap in the clothes dryer.  The man tried to douse the fire with a portable extinguisher, but was unsuccessful.  The fire is believed to have quickly spread to the wall and floor system on both levels and in the attic.

Per Fire Investigators, the cause of the fire appears accidental and originated from the dryer vent.  The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the family (2-adults and 2-children) displaced by the damage.

According to fire officials, be sure to look for and eliminate home hazards that could cause a fire to start.  You should also maintain working smoke alarms on every level of the home and in each of the bedrooms.  Develop a home fire escape plan and practice fire drills regularly.  For additional information on home fire safety, please contact the Gwinnett Fire – Community Risk Reduction/Education Section at 678.518.4845 or e-mail fireprograms@gwinnettcounty.com.
