AFTERNOON FIRE DAMAGES MUFFLER SHOP IN BUFORD

(Buford, Ga., September 24, 2015) – Gwinnett County Firefighters responded on Thursday, September 24, 2015, at 2:51p.m., to a report from an employee of a business fire at a muffler shop, located at 803 West Shad burn Ferry Road, NE in Buford.  The caller reported a car on fire in a mechanic bay.  The car was elevated on a mechanical lift at the time the fire erupted.

Crews found a vehicle that was well-involved inside a large open-style (metal) butler building on arrival.  The fire was being held in-check by the fire sprinkler system and sent heavy black smoke billowing from the structure.  Firefighters deployed attack hose lines and entered the building to control the blaze and conduct a primary search.  Employees of the business gave a verbal “all-clear” and there were no injuries reported.

Several employees were inside the business at the time and were working on the vehicle when the fire started.  The fire appears accidental and was caused by a spark from a saw that was being used to cut metal.  The spark ignited nearby fuel vapors.  The vehicle sustained heavy damage and sent extensive smoke and heat throughout the mechanic bay.  The combination of a working sprinkler suppression system; and the quick action by firefighters, kept the flames from spreading throughout the building.  The incident was declared under control at 3:21p.m.

EQUIPMENT AT THE SCENE INCLUDED: 4-Engines, 2-Ladder Trucks, 1-Squad, 1-Air & Light Unit, 2-Medic Units, 2-Battalion Chiefs, 1-Deputy Chief, and 1-Fire Investigator.
