GRASS FIRES CLOSE BUFORD HIGHWAY

(Suwanee, Ga. February 16, 2017) – Gwinnett County Firefighters worked during the afternoon to control several moderate-sized spot fires burning in the grass along Buford Highway, adjacent to the railroad tracks.  Firefighters responded on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 11:52 a.m., after a passerby called 9-1-1.  The fires were brought under control by 1:03 p.m. and the roadway was reopened at 3 p.m.

The first Engine crew to arrive on the scene quickly requested additional units in order to control the fires and protect nearby businesses that were considered exposure hazards.  The fires scorched large portions of the grass between the railroad tracks and the roadway in an approximate one-mile area.  The Power Company was requested to check several utility poles that were exposed to heat and flames.  Norfolk Southern Railroad was initially asked to stop rail traffic in the area due to firefighters working close to tracks.  Trains were eventually allowed to proceed at a slower speed in order to keep rail traffic moving.

Buford Highway was closed for an extended period of time due to hose lines and fire trucks blocking the roadway.  Police diverted traffic away from the incident to allow firefighters to safely complete extinguishment of the flames and cool remaining hot spots.

There were no structures or vehicles damaged by the fires, and no injuries were reported.  The exact cause of the fires is currently undetermined, but may have been ignited by sparks from a passing train.

EQUIPMENT AT THE SCENE INCLUDED: 5-Engines, 1-Water Tender, 1-Squad, 1-Rehab Unit, and 2-Battalion Chiefs
