The Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services will hold a “Home Safety Visit and Smoke Alarm Blitz” in the neighborhood where a fatal house fire occurred back on June 28 of this year. 

During the blitz, teams will be going door-to-door to perform a Home Safety Visit and offer smoke alarm checks.  Home Safety Visits are a proven way to address fire safety concerns within the home and ensure smoke alarms are working to provide early warning for occupants to successfully escape a fire.  Firefighters and Fire Educators will be prepared to install free smoke alarms or simply change the battery in existing alarms as needed.  

This tragic house fire serves as a reminder of the importance of following proper home fire safety practices.  Every home should be equipped with more than one working smoke alarm.  In addition to testing smoke alarms, residents will also be encouraged to develop a home fire escape plan and practice fire drills regularly.  Firefighters suggest that homeowners look for and eliminate hazards that could cause a fire to start.
