HOME DAMAGED BY MID-MORNING FIRE
(Lawrenceville, Ga. March 20, 2017) – Gwinnett County firefighters responded on Monday, March 20, 2017 at 9:15 a.m., to a report of a house fire in the 1400 block of Sir Knights Way, SE in (unincorporated) Lawrenceville.
Crews arrived to find heavy flames and smoke coming from the back of the house on the garage side. Two adult occupants were already outside - safe when fire trucks and police arrived and no injuries were reported. The blaze was brought under control by 9:32 a.m.
The occupants were alerted by the smell of smoke and went to investigate the source. They discovered the garage on fire and quickly exited the home. The alarms began sounding after the man opened the door to the garage from the kitchen and smoke entered the main-living space. The fire appears accidental and was sparked by a drop cord connected to a refrigerator inside the garage. The occupants are displaced due to the damage and are being assisted by relatives who live nearby.
This fire serves as a good reminder of the importance of home fire safety. Install and maintain working smoke alarms on every level of the home and change the batteries once a year. Be sure to replace smoke alarms that are 10 years or older. Develop a home fire escape plan and practice fire drills regularly. Look for and eliminate home hazards that could cause a fire to start.
