LOGANVILLE HOUSE FIRE CAUSED BY LIGHTNING
(Loganville, Ga., July 18, 2016) – Firefighters responded on Monday, July 18, 2016 at 5:07p.m., to a report of a lightning strike and house fire in the 3800 block of Glen Ian Drive, SW in (unincorporated) Loganville. Occupants were not home at the time and no injuries were reported. Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 5:44p.m.
Crews arrived to find heavy fire involvement in the attic and flames on the second floor on the left-side of a two-story brick and wood frame house. Firefighters quickly deployed attack hose lines and made immediate entry inside to control the fire and conduct a primary search. The blaze burned-away part of the roof and caused heavy damage to the attic and second floor. There was residual smoke and water damage throughout the house. Firefighters found the electrical breakers blown inside the home due to the lightning’s impact.
Neighbors witnessed the lightning strike to the home and called 9-1-1 to alert the fire department. Severe thunderstorms were moving through the area at the time the fire erupted. It appears that lightning may have hit the electrical components and in the attic, sparking intense fire conditions. Neighbors knocked at the front door, but got no response. They kicked-in the door to make sure no one was inside.
Firefighters encourage all citizens to be alert to weather conditions and to call 9-1-1 immediately if you suspect a lightning strike. Be prepared to evacuate and call for help if you see smoke or flames. Summertime thunderstorms can develop without warning and may include intense lightning, heavy rainfall and gusty winds
