Man Charged with Arson and Aggravated Assault

(Stone Mountain, Ga., April 13, 2016) – Firefighters responded on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 12:07a.m., to an occupant report of a house fire and person(s) stabbed in the 5200 block of Santee Street, SW in (unincorporated) Stone Mountain.

Firefighters and police arrived to find an active fire inside the home and three victims, all family members, with stab wounds waiting outside.  Firefighters simultaneously began providing medical care to the victims and deployed attack hose lines to control the fire.  Responding police officers were able to quickly secure the scene and apprehended the perpetrator,   He is described as the husband/father of the victims.  The man was found by police in the yard of a private residence a short distance from the incident.  He was taken to the hospital by police for medical evaluation before being booked at the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

According to paramedics, the injuries sustained by the mother and two teens appeared to be non-life-threatening.  They were transported to the hospital by ambulance for further evaluation and treatment.  The man’s mother-in-law and two younger children were also inside the residence at the time, but were not injured.  The fire caused moderate damage to the interior of the single-story brick and wood frame house over a basement.  The family was displaced due to the damage. The family dog, a large German shepherd, was found deceased inside the home by firefighters during a primary search.
