Carjacking - Old Norcross Road, Warrants

(Lawrenceville, Georgia)  After a month-long investigation, a robbery detective has secured 4 warrants in reference to a carjacking in June.  The initial crime occurred on June 22 at around 6am at the Britain Woods Apartment Complex at 2734 Old Norcross Road in unincorporated Lawrenceville.

The female victim walked out of her apartment in the early morning hours to get into her car, a 2001 black Chevrolet Monte Carlo.  She saw a black male working on a chair at a nearby building.  As she was walking to her car, she was struck in the back of her head with the chair.  The victim fell to the ground, and the suspect grabbed her keys.  He pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the victim.  She quickly ran and the suspect took off in her car.

The woman gave a description of the suspect to the responding officers and her vehicle was listed as stolen on GCIC.  The license plate originally displayed on the back of her vehicle was QBM3152.

More than 2 weeks later on July 9, Doraville PD initiated a traffic stop on the Chevrolet Monte Carlo.  Jeffery Merritt (age 35 – pictured above) was the driver.  He was arrested on unrelated charges, and the vehicle was impounded.  The license plate displayed on the back of the vehicle was RHL1493.  This plate was registered to a different Monte Carlo to Merritt.  On July 10, Merritt bonded out of jail and retrieved the car from the impound lot.

After Merritt had already bonded out of jail and picked up the car, Doraville PD discovered a discrepancy between the license plate number and the VIN.  GCPD was notified.  The detective assigned to the case displayed a photo line-up to the victim.

On July 21, the lead detective assigned to this case secured 4 warrants for Jeffery Merritt’s arrest.  Those charges are: Aggravated Assault, Armed Robbery, Hijacking a Motor Vehicle, and Battery.  Merritt is still on the run.  He is considered armed and dangerous.

If anyone knows where Jeffery Merritt is, please contact GCPD detectives at 770-513-5300.  To remain anonymous, tipsters should contact Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477) or visit www.crimestoppersatlanta.org.  Crime Stoppers tipsters can receive up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.  Case Number:  17-057004
