Man claiming to be Homeless Robs Local Hotel - Suspect Arrested

Update #2, 08/22/2016: Joshua Evontay Hall was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail on Saturday, August 21. 

An officer assigned to the West Precinct was doing an area check in the parking lot of 3200 Holcomb Bridge Road in unincorporated Norcross around 3am on Saturday.  The officer saw a white van in the parking lot with two people (male and female) inside and a male standing outside.  All the retail stores were closed.  The officer approached the three people and obtained their identification. 

Utilizing GCIC, the officer determined that the person standing outside the van was Joshua Evontay Hall.  He was immediately detained and taken to the Gwinnett County Jail.  (Please contact the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office for booking information.)

The woman inside the van, Karen Ann Lupton, had an outstanding warrant and was placed under arrest (16-077885).  The other male was released at the scene. 

Update #1, 08/19/2016: The lead investigator has identified the suspect in this case as Joshua Evontay Hall, age 29.  Hall is currently wanted for Robbery by Sudden Snatching, but his current location is unknown.

Original, 07/28/2016: (Norcross, Georgia)  A man claiming to be homeless robbed a local Comfort Inn and Suites (5200 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Norcross) on Saturday, July 16.  The call came into the 911 Center shortly before 10:30pm.  When the officers arrived, they spoke with the manager of the hotel, a front desk clerk, and a hotel guest.

The manager told the officers that he hired the man to do some work at the hotel earlier in the day.  As payment, the manager gave him $20 and a pizza.  The man told the manager that he was homeless and originally from Ohio.  He said that he had previously been arrested in Georgia for burglary.

In the evening, the homeless man came back inside the hotel lobby.  He spoke with the front desk clerk.  He used the clerk’s phone to call the manager.  During the conversation, he demanded more money from the manager.  The manager told him no, and the suspect hung up on him.  After the clerk got her phone back, she retreated to the back room. 

The surveillance video shows the suspect jumping onto the counter, opening the cash drawer, and stealing the money (several hundred dollars) inside.  He walks out the front door passing several hotel guests on his way out.  

Suspect description:

  • Black male
  • 20s
  • 6 feet tall
  • 190 lbs.
  • Blue shirt, dark pants, green Rosary necklace, backpack

Following the crime, the manager arrived to speak with responding officers and to show the video surveillance.  The suspect’s identity is unknown.
