Update #1, 05/24/2017, 7:00pm: The suspect is now in custody.  After several hours of negotiations, the suspect told the officers that he was prepared to surrender.  He placed down his weapon and walked outside the home.  Once outside, he was placed under arrest.

We’d like to thank the members of the neighborhood for their patience as we handled this complex and dangerous call.

Original, 05/24/2017, 5:00pm: (Lawrenceville, Georgia)  The Gwinnett County Police Department SWAT Team has been activated to a home on Saratoga Drive in unincorporated Lawrenceville.  Shortly before 2pm, deputies assigned to the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home in an attempt to serve eviction-type paperwork.

As the deputies approached the home, a woman met them on the driveway.  The woman informed the deputies that the man who was to be served was inside the home.  The deputies walked into the foyer of the home to communicate with the man.  From the top of the stairs, the man began speaking with the deputies.  The man retreated back into a bedroom.  As the deputies were trying to speak with him, they heard about 4 gunshots from inside the home.

The deputies quickly notified radio dispatch and other nearby officers that the suspect had fired his weapon.  No deputies were harmed, and neither of them discharged their firearms.  The woman fled to a neighbor’s home.

The GCPD SWAT Team and Negotiators were dispatched to the scene.  At this time, the Negotiators are attempting to communicate with the suspect so that he may peacefully surrender.

A large portion of the neighborhood has been blocked off for the safety of the residents and law enforcement.  We appreciate the patience of the people who reside in this community as we try to get the suspect to put down his weapon and surrender.

Additional updates will be provided as they become available.
