Warrants Obtained: Murder / Attempted Suicide

Update #2, 05/09/2017:

The lead detective assigned to this case has secured 5 warrants against Alton Kelly.  Alton has been charged with Felony Murder (1 count) and Aggravated Assault (4 counts).

During the course of the investigation, the detectives learned that after Alton shot Melissa, he went downstairs and shot into a bedroom occupied by a married couple and their son.  None of them were injured.  The couple and child were extended family members.  Alton then turned the gun on himself.

As of yesterday evening, Alton was still hospitalized at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville.  His condition was listed as stable, but critical.  As soon as he is discharged from the hospital, he will be transported to the Gwinnett County Jail.  The timeline for this transfer is unknown.

This is a horrific crime that will have a lasting effect on many members of the Kelly family and the community.  The Kelly family not only lost Melissa, but they also have to cope with Alton being incarcerated for these violent crimes.

Original, 05/08/2017:

(Lawrenceville, Georgia)  The Gwinnett County Police Department Homicide Unit is investigating a murder and attempted suicide on Bridge Walk Drive in unincorporated Lawrenceville.  The call came in at approximately 5:40am (05/08/2017).  The caller told the 911 call-taker that a woman had been shot inside the home.

When officers arrived at the home, they found a man and woman unconscious.  First responding officers applied a tourniquet to the female to help stop the bleeding to one of her injuries.  Both were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville with gunshot injuries.  Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the woman died.  The man is still in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Detectives believe that the man originally shot the woman and then shot himself trying to commit suicide.

There were other family members inside the home when the shooting began.  None of them were injured.  They all remained on scene and spoke to the Homicide Detectives.  Detectives do not believe that any other suspects were involved.

Uniform officers responded to a few recent domestic incidents at the home in the past couple of days.  Details about those incidents are not yet available.

Once notification is completed, names of the woman and man will be released.
