Walk-a-thon held in memory of teen car crash victims
It Won’t Happen To Me will host its third annual In Memory Of Walk-A-Thon on October 10, 2009, in Chastain Park in Atlanta. The purpose of this event is to bring about awareness of teen car crashes, the number one cause of teen deaths, and to remember teens who have died in car crashes. “By taking part in this event, you will be honoring those teens whose lives have been cut short and doing your part to support this cause to prevent more lives being lost to car crashes,” said Bill Richardson, retired Gwinnett County police officer and president of It Won’t Happen to Me.

The cost of registration for the event is $25. Pre-registration is preferred in order to receive a t-shirt and lanyard. Pre-register online at www.itwonthappentome.org. Participants can also print a registration form from the website and mail to: It Won't Happen To Me, Inc., 2645 Youth Monroe Road Monroe, GA 30655. Mail-in registrations must be submitted by September 27, 2009. Make checks payable to It Won’t Happen To Me or IWHTM. Visa, MasterCard, and Discover credit cards are accepted; please do not send cash. There will be a cookout after the walk for registered participants.

It Won't Happen To Me is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the number one cause of teen deaths, car crashes, through education and awareness. These educational initiatives help teens become safer, more responsible drivers. The organization strives to make parents aware of the importance of proper training and monitoring of their teens.

For more information, contact Diane Richardson at 770.207.9698 or diane@itwonthappentome.org, Bill Richardson at 770.289.8598 or bill@itwonthappentome.org, or Lauren Winborne at 770.216.1740 or winborne8@yahoo.com. Visit their website at www.itwonthappentome.org.

Car washing and stream health
Did you know that washing your car at home can contribute to stormwater pollution?

Wastewater from washing your car contains oil, grease, detergents, and other pollutants. When you wash your car in your driveway or on the street, the wastewater flows directly through the stormwater drainage system and into local rivers, lakes, and streams. To help reduce stormwater pollution, follow these simple steps:

  • Use a commercial car wash. Commercial car wash facilities often recycle their water or are required to send their wash water to the wastewater treatment plant; so if possible, use a facility to keep your car clean
  • If you decide to wash at home, wash less often and wash on the grass. This allows all the wastewater to soak into the ground
  • Avoid and report commercial car wash operations that allow wastewater to drain onto a paved area such as a parking lot or street, a storm drain, or waterway. It is illegal to allow car wash water to drain into these areas
  • Report illegal discharges to the storm sewer system by calling 678.376.7000 (24-hours)

For more information, contact Gwinnett County Stormwater at 678.376.6826 or visit www.gwinnettstormwater.com.

Reminder: Tag office closed for computer system maintenance
The North Gwinnett Tag Office, 2735 Mall of Georgia Boulevard, Buford, will be closed Saturday, September 26 while the Georgia Department of Revenue conducts computer system maintenance.

The maintenance period will take place from 7:00pm on Saturday, September 26 to 6:00am on Sunday, September 27. During this period, Internet and telephone tag renewals will not be available. Contact the Tax Commissioner’s office for more information.

Tax Commissioner first in Georgia to implement automated tag renewal processing
The Gwinnett Tax Commissioner’s Office began processing mailed-in tag renewals electronically in July, becoming the first tax commissioner office in Georgia to automate this process.

Mailed-in renewals are now cycled through an electronic system that opens the envelopes, scans the contents, processes the payment, and electronically updates vehicle owner records. Benefits include decreased turnaround time and less manual entry for most mail transactions. The retention of paper records will be significantly reduced and will result in an even more accurate process for mailed-in renewals. In addition to faster, more accurate processing, research capabilities are greatly enhanced by this upgrade. Customer service staff will be able to immediately access checks and supporting documentation to assist customers.

Gwinnett citizens will benefit from faster turnaround time and improved customer service. Visit www.GwinnettTaxCommissioner.com for more information on renewing your tag.
