SUV Driver Dies during Collision with a School Bus

(Buford, Georgia)  The Accident Investigation Unit is investigating a Wednesday afternoon crash involving a school bus and an SUV.  Just before 3pm on Wednesday, December 4, officers assigned to the North Precinct were dispatched to a vehicle accident on Hamilton Mill Road near Pucketts Mill Road in unincorporated Buford.  When officers arrived, they found a black 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and a Gwinnett County School Bus with front-end damage.  The driver of the SUV was not responsive.  The bus was occupied by two adults (ages 47 & 25) and five children (ages 3 – 7).

Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears as though the driver of the SUV was traveling north on Hamilton Mill Road while the bus was traveling south.  While approaching the traffic light near Cascade Falls Drive, the SUV driver suddenly lost control of his vehicle, crossed in to oncoming traffic, and struck the bus head-on.

The SUV driver, Darwin McEntyre (age 80, Buford) died at the scene.  The driver of the bus and another adult complained of minor injuries but were not transported.  None of the children were transported to the hospital.

Investigators are looking in to the possibility that Darwin was having a medical emergency at the time of the crash.  The final determination will be made by the Medical Examiner’s Office at a later time.
