School Fire Safety Inspection Program

Thank you for your interest in the community risk reduction efforts of the Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services. In addition to its mission of Saving Lives and Protecting Property, the Fire Department believes in reducing the number of fires and other emergency incidents through aggressive public education and safety awareness campaigns.

Our School Fire Safety Inspection program, established in 2007, continues to ensure that students, staff, and visitors in our schools are afforded a fire safe environment. This objective can only be accomplished by school administrators, facilities maintenance staff, custodians, and teachers, working with fire service professionals to understand and apply fire codes, and educate staff and students on the importance of proper fire and life safety practices. As a general rule, all interior and exterior fire inspections will be conducted by a Deputy Fire Marshal, escorted by school administrative or custodial staff. The Deputy Fire Marshal will conduct inspections in the shortest time possible, while properly performing their duties. A comprehensive report listing any deficiencies found will be provided once the inspection is completed.

The information provided on this site includes a School Fire Safety Checklist (SFSC). To assist you in achieving and maintaining a fire safe school, you are encouraged to use the Checklist to conduct a voluntary, self-inspection of your facilities. The SFSC is not intended to be a comprehensive list, but rather highlights many of the most common fire code provisions schools are required to meet. A self-inspection using the applicable portions of the SFSC by administrators, teachers, custodial staff, and maintenance staff will help reduce fire code deficiencies and ease the fire inspection process. Additional information is included addressing common areas of concern for school fire safety.

The Fire Department’s Prevention and Enforcement and Education Sections, provide free fire and life safety programs for all ages. School administration and staff are highly encouraged to participate annually in workplace fire safety training to include: instruction on fire evacuations, portable fire extinguishers, and preparing for fire inspections.

For additional information on the School Fire Safety Inspections Program or to schedule educational presentations, please contact the Gwinnett Fire-Community Risk Reduction Division at 678.518.4980.
