Sugarloaf Parkway Extension
from State Route 20 / Grayson Highway to State Route 316 / University Parkway
Project Description
The new road features two 12-foot lanes in each direction with a 44-foot grassed median and 16-foot shoulders within a 200-foot right-of-way. The speed limit is 45-mph through the first two curves east of SR 20 and then 55-mph for the remaining length of the project. The route includes upgraded, signalized intersections at State Route 20, New Hope Road, Martins Chapel Road, Campbell Road, and a half-cloverleaf interchange at State Route 316.

The Extension crosses over Chandler Road and under Hiram Davis Road and Alcovy Roads. Bramlett Shoals Road on either side of the extension is closed and now consists of a new, two-lane connector road constructed from Hiram Davis Road to Bramlett Shoals Road. 



About Sugarloaf Parkway Extension Phase 1 - Section 1

  • Two-mile extension of Sugarloaf Parkway from State Route 20 to New Hope Road
  • Project will improve mobility in the central and eastern part of Gwinnett County
  • Over 1.5 miles of improvements to existing roadways
  • Four-lane divided, limited-access parkway
  • Intersection with State Route 20 includes dual left turns and right turn lanes on all approaches
  • Interchange at Sugarloaf Parkway Extension and New Hope Road
  • Chandler Road bridge allows local traffic access under Sugarloaf Parkway
  • Construction costs: approximately $23.5 million
  • Funded primarily through 2005 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) with a contribution of $2.5 million from the Georgia Department of Transportation
  • Construction began December 2007
  • 55,000 tons of asphalt placed
  • 98,000 tons of rock base placed
  • 11,000 feet of storm drain pipe installed
  • 14,000 feet of guardrail installed




About Sugarloaf Parkway Extension Phase 1 - Section 2

  • 1.4 mile extension of Sugarloaf Parkway from New Hope Road to Martins Chapel Road
  • Project will improve mobility in the central and eastern part of Gwinnett County
  • Approximately 0.86 miles of improvements to existing roadways
  • New 0.5 mile two lane connector road ties Bramlett Shoals Road to Martins Chapel Road north of Sugarloaf Parkway
  • 4 lane divided limited access parkway
  • Interchange at Sugarloaf Parkway Extension and Martins Chapel Road
  • Hiram Davis Road bridge allows local traffic access over Sugarloaf Parkway
  • Construction contract in the amount of approximately $24.8 million awarded December 2008
  • Funded primarily through 2009 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax with a contribution of $2.5 million from the Georgia Department of Transportation
  • Project opened to traffic December 14, 2010
  • 26,000 tons of asphalt placed
  • 56,000 tons of rock base placed
  • 3,500 feet of storm drain pipe installed
  • 1,700 feet of guardrail installed

 

 

About Sugarloaf Parkway Extension Phase 1 – Section 3A

  • 2.3 mile extension of Sugarloaf Parkway from Martins Chapel Road to West Campbell Road
  • Project will improve mobility in the central and eastern part of Gwinnett County
  • Over 0.48 miles of improvements to existing roadways
  • New 0.5 mile two lane connector road ties Bramlett Shoals Road to Martins Chapel Road north of Sugarloaf Parkway
  • 4 lane divided limited access parkway with 44 foot depressed median
  • Includes new bridge over Alcovy River
  • Interchange at Sugarloaf Parkway Extension and West Campbell Road
  • Construction contract in the amount of approximately $15.5 million awarded December 2009
  • Funded primarily through 2009 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax
  • Project opened to traffic August 2011
  • 35,000 Tons of asphalt placed
  • 58,000 Tons of rock base placed
  • 4,800 Feet of storm drain pipe installed
  • 18,000 Feet of guardrail installed

  • 0.62 mile extension of Sugarloaf Parkway from West Campbell Road to SR 316/University Parkway
  • 0.20 miles of entrance ramp from West Campbell Road to Sugarloaf Parkway NB
  • 0.20 miles of exit ramp from Sugarloaf Parkway SB to West Campbell Road
  • 0.57 miles of entrance ramp from SR 316/University Parkway EB to Sugarloaf Parkway SB
  • 0.59 miles of exit ramp from Sugarloaf Parkway NB to SR 316/University EB
  • 0.59 miles of entrance ramp from Sugarloaf Parkway NB to SR 316/University WB
  • 0.60 miles of exit ramp from SR 316/University Parkway to Sugarloaf Parkway SB
  • 0.47 mile of improvement and horizontal and vertical realignment of Alcovy Road between West Campbell Rd and West Drowning Road
  • 32,097 tons of asphalt placed
  • 59,272 tons of graded aggregate base placed
  • 5,399 feet of storm drain pipe installed
  • 20,050 feet of guardrail installed
  • 13,066 feet pf fence installed
  • 1,550,000 cubic yards of embankment
  • 4,800 linear feet of fiber optic cable installed
  • Section from West Campbell Road to SR 316 EB opened to traffic on July 2, 2012
  • Interchange with SR 316/University Parkway opened to traffic on December 11, 2012, completing the entire Phase 1 from SR 20 to SR 316.
