Gwinnett County firefighters responded to two separate apartment fires on the afternoon of Thursday, September 8, 2022.

The first apartment fire was dispatched at 2:05 p.m. on the 3200 block of Windscape Village Lane NW in Norcross. Fire crews arrived at 2:08 p.m. finding a two-story, multi-family dwelling with heavy smoke pushing out of a gable vent on the delta side and heavy fire involvement on the back of the structure. Firefighters worked rapidly to bring the fire under control at 2:46 p.m. A building maintenance crew confirmed that they were repairing an air conditioning (AC) unit where the fire originated. Firefighters determined that the fire was accidental, caused by activities consistent with AC repair. All crews rotated through rehab before being returned to service. Firefighters worked with the American Red Cross and apartment management to secure shelter and support for 20 people displaced by the apartment fire.

Another apartment fire was dispatched at 2:10 p.m. on the 4300 block of Satellite Boulevard NW in Duluth. Multiple bystanders reported seeing a fire near the playground with large flames. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the playground on fire and spreading to a nearby apartment building. The apartment building's power meter sustained significant damage from the fire. Due to safety concerns, power was disconnected to the building. The fire was brought under control by 2:27 p.m. Firefighters worked with apartment management to establish shelter for families in 14 apartment units. Assistance from the American Red Cross was not needed at this location. The cause of the fire was undetermined and remains under investigation.

There were no injuries reported at either incident. Incident response required to mitigate these two apartment fires included 9- Engines, 3- Ladder Trucks, 1- Squad, 1- Rescue, 2- Medic Units, 1-Medical Supervisor, 4- Command Staff Units, 1- SRU, 3- Fire Investigators, 1- Air and Light Unit, and 2 PIOs. A total of 58 fire personnel responded.
