APARTMENT FIRE DISPLACES RESIDENTS OF EIGHT UNITS

(Duluth, Ga., December 1, 2018) - Firefighters were dispatched at 1:24 A.M. on December 1, 2018 to a report of an apartment fire at the 3400 block of Sweetwater Road NW in unincorporated Duluth. The caller to 9-1-1 reported that the mailboxes attached to the building were on fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed a working fire to be found at the multi-family dwelling.  Crews immediately deployed hand lines to begin their attack on the fire which had spread to the attic.  The firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading beyond the attic.  Unfortunately, due to a combination of the power being shut off and residual effects of pulling dry-wall from the ceiling to confirm that the fire had been completely extinguished, a total of eight units are not currently able to be occupied.  The Fire Investigator has yet to determine the cause of the incident.

Approximately twenty individuals have been displaced from the eight units affected by the blaze.  American Red Cross has provided assistance to these individuals. Thankfully, there were no injuries to any of the residents or firefighters.

EQUIPMENT AT THE SCENE INCLUDED: 6-Engines, 1-Squad, 2-Trucks, 1-Air & Light, 1-Medical Unit, 1-Medical Supervisor, 1-District Chief, 2-Battalion Chiefs, 1-Fire Investigator, and 1-PIO.
