Gas Leak Outside on Bethesda Church Road
(Lawrenceville, Ga., January 10, 2019) – Firefighters responded at 3:15 p.m. to a natural gas leak outside on Bethesda Church Road, SW at E/B Ronald Reagan Parkway in unincorporated Lawrenceville. Crews found a strong odor of gas and an active leak at a construction site on arrival.
The leak was caused by a construction crew that hit a 4-inch gas line while digging near the roadway. An emergency crew from Atlanta Gas Light responded to the scene to stop the leak. AGL had to dig in two separate locations to locate the line and bring the situation under control. The gas company was able to stop the leak without disrupting gas service to an adjacent apartment complex. There were no evacuations and no injuries reported.
Per the Incident Commander, gas vapors readily dissipated in the atmosphere due to windy conditions. Firefighters monitored air quality throughout the incident and there were no elevated readings detected on hazmat meters. Firefighters were poised to protect gas company workers and nearby exposures due to the potential threat from the escaping gas.
Bethesda Church Road was temporarily closed between Ronald Reagan Parkway and Hidden Valley Drive. Police diverted traffic away from the incident during the evening rush hour. The roadway was reopened at 7:04 p.m. and all fire units returned to service.
