Firefighters responded at 4:13 p.m., to a neighbor report of a house fire in the 5900 block of Morgan Road, NW in unincorporated Doraville/Atlanta. The caller to 9-1-1 reported flames coming from the roof of the home.
Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames showing from the attic and roof of a single-story, wood-frame house. Firefighters quickly deployed fire attack hose lines and made immediate entry to battle the blaze and conduct a primary search. No one was found inside the burning home and no injuries were reported. The blaze caused heavy damage to the attic and roof and fire damage in a bedroom on the back of the house. The rest of the interior living space sustained extensive smoke and water damage. Two small dogs and a cat did not survive and were removed by firefighters during the primary search. The occupant was not home at the time of the fire and reported to the scene as crews were battling the blaze. The fire was sparked by a lightning strike during a strong thunderstorm. Initial fire crews were challenged by access issues due to a steep tree-lined driveway leading to the home. The occupant declined Red Cross assistance and was planning to stay with a neighbor.
