GWINNETT FIRE MEDIA E-NEWS RELEASE – FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES RESPONSE ACTIVITY FOR THE JULY 4TH HOLIDAY

(Lawrenceville, Ga., July 5, 2018) – Firefighters responded to several reports of grass fires, vehicle fires and dumpster fires in different parts of the County during the July 4th Holiday.  This would include incidents from July 3-5.  It is unknown whether fireworks played a factor in all of the reported incidents.  There was no major damage reported in the above incident types.  The Fire PIO was not made aware of any serious injuries as a result of fireworks, outdoor grilling or swimming pools.  We did have one working house fire that caused significant damage to the attic and roof of the home.  The information is listed below.

House Fire – Firefighters responded on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at 2:31 a.m., to an occupant report of a house fire in the 2000 block of Skylar Leigh Drive, NE in Buford.  Crews arrived to find a working fire in the attic and flames already through the roof on the back of the house.  Firefighters quickly deployed fire attack hose lines and made immediate entry to combat the blaze and conduct a primary search.  The blaze caused heavy damage to the attic and roof and extensive smoke, heat and water damage to the living space.  A man and woman were home at the time and escaped unharmed.  They discovered the attic on fire after smelling smoke on the second floor.  The Red Cross was contacted to provide assistance for the displaced occupants.  Per Fire Investigators, the blaze was possibly caused by spent fireworks.  There were remnants of spent fireworks found near the back and side of the house: however, it is unclear where they were discharged from.  The exact cause of the fire is undetermined.  There were no injuries reported.

Equipment at the scene included: 3-Engines, 1-Ladder Truck, 1-Squad, 1-Medic Unit, 1-Air & Light Unit, 2-Battalion Chiefs and 2-Fire Investigators.  See photos below and attached.
