STRUCTURAL COLLAPSE STABILIZED BY TECHNICAL RESCUE TEAM

(Duluth, Ga., Nov. 15, 2019) - Firefighters responded on Friday, November 15, 2019 at 12:12pm, to a report of a car being driven into the InTown Suites Extended Stay at the intersection of Steve Reynolds Boulevard NW and Club Drive NW in unincorporated Duluth.

Crews arrived to find a car driven into the corner of the structure. It’s unclear what caused the driver of the vehicle to drive into the building because he denied having a medical emergency and did not have a medical complaint. No one was in the room at the time of impact. The first responding crew assisted with evacuating the two floors immediately above the damaged room. As an assessment of the structural damage was being done, the department’s Technical Rescue Team (TRT-24) responded to the scene. TRT is comprised of firefighters specially trained to handle these types of incidents. The team confirmed that the damage had compromised the structural integrity of the building and immediate action was needed. TRT members devised a plan to provide temporary structural supports in the affected area. Firefighters paid very close attention to detail and completed the task in just under two hours. The supports will be in place until permanent repairs are made. The scene was turned over to Gwinnett County Police for accident report handling and all fire apparatus returned to service.

EQUIPMENT AT THE SCENE INCLUDED: 1-Engine, 1-Medic Unit, 1-TRT Truck, 1-GSAR Truck and 1-Battalion Chief.
