GWINNETT ANIMAL SHELTER TAKES IN DOGS EVACUATED FROM SOUTH CAROLINA SHELTER

(Lawrenceville, Ga., Sept. 14, 2018) – The Gwinnett Animal Shelter in partnership with Best Friends Animal Society has accepted 24 adoptable dogs from a Dillon, S.C., shelter affected by Hurricane Florence. Mandatory evacuation efforts have impacted already full shelters throughout region, with more animals expected in the wake of this storm.

“We are pleased to be in a position to find homes for these pets,” said Alan Davis, Gwinnett Animal Welfare Division Manager. “Due to the success of Free Friday Adoptions, we have the capacity to successfully house and find homes for these dogs.”

The “Dillon Dogs” will be immediately available for adoption along with all of the other animals currently housed at the shelter. All pets are free on Fridays and $20 on other days throughout the month of September. Dogs are typically $45 to adopt and cats are usually $30.

With rare exceptions, dogs and cats up for adoption at the shelter have been examined by Animal Welfare and Enforcement staff veterinarians. The future pets have been vaccinated, are neutered or spayed, and are ready to go home on the day of adoption.

The Gwinnett Animal Shelter will temporarily close intake to owner surrenders to ensure the successful transition of these 24 new dogs.

Davis reminds those considering adopting an animal the decision involves several considerations, including responsible planning for space, permission if renting and follow-up veterinarian care from a local clinic. Animals are forever family members that require love, attention, exercise, and stimulation, and can live 10 years or longer depending on age and breed.

The shelter is open for adoptions Monday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Gwinnett Animal Shelter is located at 884 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville.
