LETTER FROM CHAIRMAN NASH

Dear Gwinnett County Residents and Business Owners:

Gwinnett County will be 200 years old next year and you’re invited to help celebrate our remarkable community!

Our county was created on December 15, 1818, and named for Button Gwinnett, one of three Georgia signers of the Declaration of Independence. The land came from Cherokee and Creek Indians combined with a small portion of Jackson County. We were the 50th county formed in Georgia and are today its  50th largest in landmass. We’re likely to surpass the population of Fulton County by 2040 when Gwinnett will have more residents that any other county in Georgia.

The County has formed a bicentennial advisory committee that has launched a website and is making plans for a year-long celebration starting this December. I encourage you to get involved – as an individual, community group, school, church, or business – by helping plan and organize related events, programs, or public performances. You can also submit an event through the official bicentennial website.

We have begun videotaping a series of oral histories for a Story Vault of memories focused on our past, present, and future. I believe it is important to remember our history, including the crucial roles of agriculture, transportation, schools, businesses, and churches. And I also believe it is important to reflect on our rapid transformation since the 1970s into a vibrant, dynamic, and diverse community that today is home to people and businesses from every corner of the world.

Along the way, Gwinnett developed a can-do attitude and tradition of working together to make our community the best place to live, work, play, and raise a family. And that is worth celebrating.

So share your story, pick an activity to attend, or plan one of your own. You can find out more by getting in touch at info@gwinnettcounty.com or 770.822.8862. We look forward to hearing from you and celebrating 200 years of our shared community!

Sincerely,

Charlotte Nash Signature
