Learn More(Lawrenceville, Ga., June 18, 2026) – The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners has approved an expansion of the police department’s community service aide program, adding 12 new civilian positions to the team along with the necessary vehicles, technology and equipment. Community service aides handle low-priority, non-threatening calls that involve directing traffic, assisting with missing person searches, canvassing for video evidence and witnesses, and taking property crime reports. The program frees up sworn police officers to focus on urgent and major incidents.
“Gwinnett’s growth requires us to think differently about how we serve our community,” said Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson. “Expanding the community service aide program is an example of government working smarter to meet residents where they are, support our public safety professionals, and continue delivering the exceptional services that help make Gwinnett one of the best places in the nation to live, work, and thrive.”
The community service aide program launched in 2025 with six aides assigned to the Central Precinct. During the program’s first five months, community service aides participated in 2,500 directed patrols and handled 1,202 traffic calls and 1,278 general and assisting calls. Aides also handled 865 calls for service, or 13% of all police calls during their shifts, performed 1,953 area checks and assisted during inclement winter weather events in the first quarter of 2026.
“The community service aide program is delivering exactly what we had envisioned: faster response times, increased officer availability, improved service to our residents and more efficient use of resources,” said Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure. “This program allows us to deploy the right resources to the right call while maximizing the return on every public-safety dollar invested, and I am grateful to the Board of Commissioners for approving the expansion.”
The 12 new community service aides will be assigned to the North and West precincts.
