Gwinnett County is mourning the loss of Gwinnett County Superior Court Judge Deborah Fluker, a trailblazing jurist and dedicated public servant who passed away following a courageous battle with cancer.

Elected in 2020 and re-elected in 2024, Judge Fluker made history as one of the first African American Superior Court Judge in Gwinnett County. She built a distinguished legal career rooted in fairness, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to justice.

Before taking the bench, Judge Fluker served as an Assistant District Attorney in Hall, DeKalb, and Gwinnett counties. She also broke barriers as the first African American municipal court judge for the City of Suwanee and the first African American female municipal court judge for the City of Dacula. She later served as a Gwinnett County Magistrate Judge before fulfilling her lifelong goal of serving on the Superior Court.

Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson reflected on Judge Fluker’s impact.

“Judge Deborah Fluker didn’t just serve on the bench, she changed it. She brought integrity, wisdom, and a fearless commitment to justice that shaped our courts and our community. As a trailblazer and barrier-breaker, she opened doors that will not close again. Her legacy will be felt for generations in the lives she touched and the path she paved. Gwinnett County is stronger because of her service, and we mourn her loss deeply.”

Judge Fluker’s legacy extends far beyond the courtroom. She was widely respected across the legal community and known for her leadership, compassion, and dedication to public service. Her influence will continue to shape Gwinnett County for years to come.

A public visitation will be held Friday, May 1 from noon until 8:00 p.m. at Gregory B. Levett & Sons Funeral Home, 914 Scenic Highway in Lawrenceville.

A Celebration of Life service will take place Saturday, May 2 at 11:00 a.m. at Hebron Church, 202 Hebron Church Road in Dacula. Pastor Avery Headd will deliver the eulogy.
