Choosing the right car seat is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your child. As children grow, their seating needs change. Always select a car seat that fits your child’s current height, weight, and age—and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for proper use.
Find the Right Car Seat
Car seat recommendations vary by age and size. Use the guidance below to help determine the safest option for your child.
Birth to 12 Months
Infants should always ride in a rear-facing car seat. This position provides the best support for a baby’s head, neck, and spine in the event of a crash.
- Infant-only car seats: Designed for newborns and small babies, these seats are used only in the rear-facing position.
- Convertible and all-in-one car seats: These seats allow for extended rear-facing use with higher height and weight limits, accommodating your child as they grow.
Ages 1 to 3 Years
Keep your child in a rear-facing car seat as long as possible. This is the safest option and should be maintained until your child reaches the maximum height or weight limit set by the manufacturer.
Once your child outgrows the rear-facing seat, transition to a forward-facing car seat with a harness.
Ages 4 to 7 Years
Children should remain in a forward-facing car seat with a harness until they reach the maximum height or weight limit for that seat.
After outgrowing the forward-facing seat, children should use a booster seat. Booster seats should always be used in the back seat of the vehicle.
Key Safety Tips
- Always install and use car seats according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Register your car seat to receive safety updates and recall notices.
- Ensure the harness fits snugly and is properly positioned.
- Keep children in the back seat until at least age 13.
