A Firemedic candidate, once offered a position, will be assigned to the department’s Fire Academy. Work hours will be from 0700 – 1600. While assigned to the academy the candidate will be required to complete 2 weeks of orientation, which includes 40 hours of EMS orientation in disciplines such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Basic Life Support and paramedic knowledge and skills validation. Other training during this 2 week period includes the review of the department’s standing medical orders, review of electronic patient care reporting software; review of department’s staffing application, and medic unit driver training. A candidate that has successfully completed 2 weeks of orientation at the Fire Academy will then be transferred into the field and work a 24-hour on 48-hour off schedule and are assigned to one of three (A, B, or C) shifts. The Firemedic Candidate will also be required to complete 15 to 25 shifts (this may vary depending on experience), in the Paramedic Apprenticeship Program. This program is designed to provide a structural environment to facilitate candidates transitioning from their 2 week orientation to field operations while under the evaluation of a Field Training Specialist. The Firemedic candidate must successfully complete this program before being released to the field and utilized as staffing.
