Button Gwinnett: The Founding Father Behind Our County's Name

Look closely at the Declaration of Independence and one name will stand out — Gwinnett. Our county was named in honor of one of America's Founding Fathers, Button Gwinnett.

Button Gwinnett was born in Gloucestershire, England in 1735. He became involved in local government, serving as a justice of the peace and a member of the Colonial Assembly. In 1776, he was elected as one of Georgia's delegates to the Continental Congress, and, on August 2, 1776, Gwinnett became one of Georgia's three signers of the Declaration of Independence, alongside Lyman Hall and George Walton.

His signature on this fundamental document is more than a historical record — it ties our county to the founding of the nation and the story we write together. Learn more about Gwinnett’s history.
