Gwinnett County Police offers unpaid internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Our internships are designed to meet academic requirements while allowing students to contribute to meaningful projects that support both their education and the Department’s mission while providing valuable real-world experience.

Applicants must:

  1. Be at least 20 years old on the first day of the internship.
  2. Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university.
  3. Submit a letter of recommendation from their school’s Intern Coordinator.
  4. Submit an essay explaining why they wish to intern with the specific unit within the department.
Specialized internship opportunities may be available in:
911 Communications Dispatch

The Communications division is responsible for answering both emergency and non-emergency calls for service. Other responsibilities include dispatching services for Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical Units.

Behavioral Health Unit

Co-responder teams of one officer and one clinician respond to calls for service regarding individuals experiencing mental health concerns. Interns will be partnered with a clinician or BHU officer and respond with the unit to calls for service as well as gain exposure to mental health services offered by county and local partners.

Crime Scene Investigations Unit

The Crime Scene Investigations Section is a unit that is responsible for providing forensic assistance to the Criminal Investigations Division with the collection, processing, and preservation of collected evidence from various crime scenes within Gwinnett County. The Crime Scene Investigations Section is equipped with personnel that can respond and process crime scenes ranging from stolen vehicles to complex death scenes. Crime Scene Specialists are trained in various specializations to include latent print examination, footwear and tread pattern analysis, ballistic analysis, and marijuana examinations.

Criminal Investigations Section

The Criminal Investigations Section is divided into two parts, persons crimes and property crimes. Within each part are several units, Homicide/Assault, Robbery, Special Victims Unit, Burglary, Motor Vehicle Theft, Electronic and Financial Crimes, and General Crimes. Interns assigned to CIS will rotate through each unit to learn about the unit’s unique procedures and practices.

Office of Emergency Management

The Gwinnett County Office of Emergency Management is a civilian unit that handles a variety of tasks, including planning for emergencies and disasters, responding to incidents as a coordinating agency, directing mitigation efforts against hazards, and assisting Gwinnett County Government and its residents in recovery after an incident. The Office of Emergency Management collaborates closely with all Gwinnett County departments, private/nonprofit partners, and city municipalities to achieve these goals.

Uniform Division

The Uniform Division is divided into six precincts that cover all areas of the county. Officers in the uniform division carry out routine patrol and respond to calls for service. Interns will have the opportunity to observe several different precincts and accompany officers on various calls for service as well as learn about patrol procedures and overall crime deterrence practices.

Situational Awareness and Crime Response Center (SACRC)

The Situational Awareness and Crime Response Center functions as a real-time crime tracking and response hub. It uses advanced tools, including Flock safety cameras, license plate readers, and predictive analytics, to monitor active 911 calls and respond swiftly to public safety incidents.
